The Department of Defense has identified 3,831 American service members who have died since the start of the Iraq war. It confirmed the deaths of the following Americans on Thursday:

GRIESE, Louis A., 30, Sgt., Army; Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; 101st Airborne Division.

McGOVERN, Timothy I., 28, Cpt., Army; Idaville, Ind.; First Cavalry Division.

SMITHERMAN, Brandon W., 21, Specialist, Army; Conroe, Tex.; First Cavalry Division.
